As a child, I’d sit in on my mom’s classes as a bilingual middle school teacher in an impoverished neighborhood. I would get to know her students on a personal level, many of whom had recently immigrated from various countries, mostly Latin America. Over time, I listened to stories of their dangerous immigration journeys and the impoverished conditions they currently live in. My city, Hayward, desperately needs safe green spaces for the community to enjoy, because the limited green spaces we have are riddled with crime and gang activity. These observations sparked my passion to give back to my community through design. I believe that all human beings, regardless of their socioeconomic status, deserve to live in an environment that promotes healthier living. These principles guided my vision for the dance museum I showcased in my portfolio. Having a dance background myself, I believe in promoting physical activity in inviting spaces. Studies show that students who are involved in extracurricular activities report higher levels of self-esteem and even improved academic success.
